Oh Hello Morocco, There You Are

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 02:39 PM PDT

We fled Marrakesh. I picked a place called Essaouira, which had nice things written about it and is on the Atlantic coast.

We tried to figure out the last time we had been on the Atlantic and it was three years ago, when we left Boston to travel. We had driven out to the Cape at 4 AM and spent a weekend in Provincetown trying to prevent the dogs from drinking too much sea water. It felt strange to be on the other side of that ocean now, on the opposite continent looking back at New England, in an entirely new world I never knew existed. Life is bizarre.

We were instantly charmed by the old walled city and it’s little shops and kiosks. We smiled at people as we walked by. We ambled about all day, just happily chatting to each other, trying to soak in the strange-to-us mix of Muslim dress, Moroccan style, beach life and a 16th century Portuguese fortress. I said, “I am so glad we left Marrakesh.” And my husband, ever the diplomat, said, “well, it wasn’t that bad.”

That’s probably true. But I liked Essaouira, the city with too many vowels, so much better.

There’s still a ton of shopping, like Marrakesh, but the slower pace and more relaxed attitude didn’t make every stroll down the street feel like a high-pressure sales situation.  I will admit, I was tempted to buy some shoes.

They even had baby shoes that were so cute.

And more shoes…

So yeah, there are a lot of shoes in Morocco.  And they are pretty.  But no, I didn’t buy any…

Feeling the pursestrings loosening, I did what any red blooded American woman with a secret desire to own 100 pairs of Moroccan hand-crafted shoes, even though she only has a single suitcase to carry EVERYTHING SHE OWNS would do… I bought a ticket to Cairo, Egypt.  You know, where they just had a revolution and overthrew their government. Please don’t tell my Mother-in-law, she’ll have a heart attack.
