A family trip to the mountains of Oregon is not only a scenic drive but it can also be educational and fun for the entire family if you stop at the Grant County Historical Museum in Canyon City, Oregon, for some American history. This museum focuses on the live of the American pioneers, the Native American, the miner and settlers. Mannequins that are life sized represent the famous people of the time.

You will be surprised to find Chinese artifacts but the Chinese did come to the area after the gold rush. Some of the other things you will experience are a display about the cowboys and ranchers showing their tools, guns, saddles, and two headed cattle. There is clothing of the period so you can see what Great-grandma wore and her house wares that she used to do her chores and keep house.

The Joaquin Miller Cabin is on display, the home of the famous “Poet of the Sierras”; the jail from the mining town of Greenhorn, Oregon is to be seen as well as player pianos with the roller music and old vitrolas. The museum also displays genealogy information, old newspapers and Victorian Scrap art. There is a large rock and gem collection from Grant county to see. There are over 5,000 pictures displayed and much much more to be enjoyed and remembered for years to come.
