| Visit the Accademia Museum in Venice Posted: 26 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT ![]() Venice, a city often regarded as a work of art in itself, is also home to some of the most important pre-19th century Italian masterpieces. If you are a lover of fine art a visit to Venice's most acclaimed museum and gallery, the Accademia (Gallerie Dell'Accademia) is an unmissable part of any visit to the city. The Accademia was founded in 1750 by the Venetian senate as the premier school of painting, sculpture and architecture in Venice. Today it is an outstanding and comprehensive showcase of the master painters of Venice - the largest such collection in the world. The museum is located in the Dorsoduro disctrict of Venice and the approach over the wooden Ponte Dell'Accademia provides great views of the city including the Grand Canal. The Accademia comprises 24 rooms and is almost impossible to take in during a single visit. In addition, it is very popular and you may experience queues and delays so planning ahead is vital. A map and guide book are recommeded and will enable you to plan what you most want to see. The successive rooms of the museum provide a representative history of Venetian art between the 13th and 18th centuries. There are works by Titian, Tintoretto, Carpacio, Veronese and Giorgione (whose Tempest is one of the gallery's most famous highlights). The Accademia provides us with a window to life in Venice as it was lived through 5 centuries through the eyes of some of its greatest Italian painters and is a highlight of any visit to the city. | Tarragona's Roman Amphitheater Posted: 25 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT ![]() The Roman Amphitheater, located just beyond Barcelona in Tarragona, Spain, is a destination worth visiting. Although what you as the visitor will be walking through are now considered ruins, it is still an impressive sight and a reminder of a different era. It serves as an open air monument that celebrates the past. The Amphitheater was built around the 2nd century AD (over 1,800 years ago) and is massive in size at about 102 meters by 130 meters, especially impressive when considering it was entirely built by hand. It originally held between 13,000 and 15,000 people. The Amphitheater has now been reconstructed as much as possible to its original state (though it is still a ruin) for visitors to see. When you visit the Roman Amphitheater you are walking in the steps of history. It was where many people who had been sentenced to death were executed. Bishop Fruchuosus and his two Deacons were martyred at the Amphitheater by being burned alive in front of a large audience! Gladiators would use the Roman Amphitheater to fight each other and the wild animals that would be brought in for the event. It could also be filled with water from the sea for the purpose of holding mock boat battles. Once Christianity became popular in the region the Amphitheater was no longer being used and a Visigoth basilica and later a Roman church were built on the property. But today those have been removed and the Roman Amphitheater has been restored for you to see.
