A Year of Funemployment

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:46 PM PDT

A year ago today, my husband was unceremoniously laid off from his job of six years with a two week severance package and a “I’m sure you’ll land on your feet”. Looking back at the post I wrote the day after, I had almost forgotten how freaked out we were by the whole thing. Having the rug ripped out from beneath you is jarring to say the least. Your body reacts before your mind can process anything. You feel adrenaline, panic, your central nervous system is on overdrive and it gives everything this off tilt feeling, like you just got off an amusement ride and you’re still trying to find your feet.

A year later and Drew has just landed in Rwanda, for a 10 day solo trip, where he’ll be filming the final interview for the documentary (the lovely Kirsty from nerdynomad.com). Last week we were on Koh Tao, riding a motorbike down to the beach and sipping frozen lime shakes under umbrellas. At some point I remembered that it had almost been a year since he was laid off and I asked him, “Can you believe it’s been a year already?”

“I know!”

“Look at where we are! And what we’ve done this year! We’ve been to some of the most beautiful places in the world: Greece, Paris, and now we’re sitting on a beach in Thailand. Our life is crazy.”

“Seriously, that was the best thing that could have happened.”

Drew is still recovering from the workforce. We figure it takes about 1 month for every year you worked to figure out what it is you really want to do with your life. He has some ideas. There’s no rush. In the meantime, congratulations on your one year anniversary, babe!

(Sorry sweetie, these are the best pics I could find, apparently Cole has been drawing the focus away!)

Congrats Drew! Have fun in Rwanda!
