To know that someone, a stranger really, has put in so much thought and patience in making something pretty just for you. Isn’t that such a nice and warm feeling? Well, you’d be happy to know that each cup of hot coffee in Coffee Chemistry Signature is prepared with much patience, effort and love. Oh yes, look at the love in every cup. Share the It was my second time visiting the signature outlet in First Subang Mall, the first of which was to celebrate my birthday with my fabulous friends. Back then, I was sort of the centre of attention for the night, which meant my photos were being taken instead of the other way round. Coffee Chemistry Signature’s menu The owner recommended us to have either a beer or fruit juice to start the meal, so I obediently asked for the Watermelon and Lychee Cooler. This came in a pretty ensemble, complete with a whole lychee perched on top of a watermelon slice. This tasted refreshingly sweet without being artificial (no sugar was added in the process) and went well with most of the savoury dishes we ordered that night too. Watermelon & Lychee Cooler (RM7.90) Saucer had the Paulaner Dark beer, his favourite beer of all times really. Whenever we go for grocery shopping, he would stop by the beer section hoping to find bottles of Paulaner for sale, but he’d had no luck so far. So imagine his thrill when he saw this on the menu! Paulaner Dark (RM22) & Heineken (RM15) Since I didn’t get the chance to try their food during my first visit, I made it a point to order some of their best-sellers, starting with the Soft Shell Crab Salad. This came with a whole soft shell crab, deep fried to a crispy finish without being oily. The crab was resting comfortably on a bed of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a whole boiled egg, making this a balanced and wholesome dish on its own. To bring this salad a notch higher, mix it with the spicy mango salsa sauce. Oh the sauce is brilliant – sour, spicy and sweet, gave this salad a unique taste. Soft Shell Crab Salad (RM13.90) The Classic Roasted Lamb Shoulder with Au Juice is one of the many dishes that is only available in the Signature outlet and not the Cafe. The lamb was nothing less than tender and moist, drizzled with a mild jus that complemented the slight gamey taste well. After all, lamb would not be lamb if the signature gamey flavour is not there. Classic Roasted Lamb Shoulder with Au Juice (RM26.90) My preferred main dish was the Pan-seared Black Cod Fish with Spicy Mango Salsa Sauce. I was pretty impressed to know that a cafe-style establishment is serving black cod, normally served in fine-dining restaurants. Unlike the normal cod, the black cod could cost up to twice the price of normal cod, but it tasted so much better. The fish was smooth, flaky and had the slippery melt-in-your-mouth texture that I just couldn’t get enough of. I blame it on the mango salsa sauce though, which was slightly sour and spicy, masking the fishy smell well and making it that much more desirable. My only gripe was that the portion of the fish was perhaps a tad small. Well, that meant I had to order something else to fill up the tummy. Pan-seared Black Cod Fish with Spicy Mango Salsa Sauce (RM29.90) The Angus Beef Steak is a limited edition dish that is only available upon request. Since it’s not listed on the menu, this dish is recommended usually to regular customers, and only limited quantity is served daily. I was lucky to be able to share this with my fellow diners, and I found the medium-rare steak rather juicy especially in the middle. Although the edges were slightly overdone, the centre portion that was pink and flavourful managed to make up for it. If you find the steak too dry at the edges, well that’s what the delicious gravy is there for. Angus Beef Steak (RM 45.90 for 180gm) – limited quantity available only Drizzled with glorious brown sauce All of the dishes above were nothing compared to my new found love for this unique dish - Spicy Assam Fish Pasta. You read it right, it’s the first time I see Assam and Pasta in the same sentence, such that Saucer couldn’t resist to order it. And we definitely did not regret it, for this turned out to be the most memorable dish of the night. It arrived with a pungent smell, the type that gives you the appetite even when you’re already full, and had a generous amount of fish slices to boot! This was fusion at its best – sour, spicy and savoury pasta served together with deep fried fish slices. The aroma of curry leaves and curry powder were unmistakable, so much so that I’m salivating even as I’m writing about it. I never thought the combination would work so well. Bravo to the chef. Spicy Assam Fish Pasta (RM15.90) Apart from the ala carte dishes, Coffee Chemistry Signature also offers value set lunches daily, consisting of a main dish and a drink. According to the chef, the most famous sets were the Assam Laksa and the Butter Herb Rice with Teriyaki Chicken. The Assam Laksa was a little too diluted for my liking (after having lived in Penang for almost 5 years), but the taste of the soup was not too far off from the Penang laksa. Apparently the presentation and flavour were tweaked to suit the taste of the locals here. Assam Laksa (RM8.90) As for the Teriyaki Chicken, I had no complaints since the butter herb rice it was served with was most flavourful. The rice was generously mixed with Italian herbs, giving it such a nice fragrance that could be overpowering for some. But not for me, I loved it! Butter Herb Rice with Teriyaki Chicken (RM8.90) To complete our meal, how could we forget their famous Affogato? A scoop of vanilla ice-cream topped with chocolate chips and then soaked with the rich Graffeo coffee resulted in nothing short of sensational. At the risk of not being able to sleep that night, Saucer couldn’t help but finish the whole cup, right to the last drop! Affogato (RM9.50) Cafe Latte (RM7.90) As for me, I settled for something a little milder, the Caramel Flavoured Cafe Latte, which came with a nice leaf. I always liked to check the coffee foam to see its texture and thickness, something I’ve learnt from the Illy Coffee Workshop last time. Much to my delight, the foam here was flawless. The microfoam was velvety smooth, without much air bubbles and it remained that way throughout the duration of my meal. What’s more impressive is their Graffeo coffee which was aromatic but not bitter. We did not have to use a single pack of sugar that night. And you’d be glad to know that I could still sleep soundly after this cup of coffee. Caramel-Flavoured Latte (RM9.50) Now that I’ve tried some of the specialty dishes here, I’m happy to urge you to come not just for the coffee – try the food too!
